20-21 September Verona and Stay In Ferrara Prepare for Train to Trieste

We had our first train mishap on 20 September, missed our connection to Verona in Bologna. Train was from Ferrara was late and we didn’t make it to the right platform in time for the connection. Caught a later train, but it cut about an hour of our time in Verona since we had return reservations booked.

Verona was packed with people. Because of our late arrival we headed straight to a recommended trattoria for lunch. Pasta with seafood for me and a caprice salad for Dolly. From there we took the view from Ponte Pietra over the Adige River. You could look across and see the Roman era amphitheater (Still used today) and Castel San Pietro. A climb to the top was an option, but it was in the high 70s and we had just eaten lunch. We opted instead to make our way back to Piazza Bra & the Arena. We passed by several other squares, a crowd waiting to buy tickets to see Julliet’s Balcony, an even longer line to get in, (When I was here before you could see the balcony for free and only had to pay to get in the home) and down the main shopping street, Via Mazzini, that was jammed with people.

We stopped on the steps of a building overlooking the plaza and people watched and elected to get the hop-on/hop-off bus for a circuit of the city, before heading back to the train. It passed most of the sites we had already seen on foot but good to hear the narrative (The story of Romeo and Julliet is far older than Shakespear’s version and may not have really been about a couple in Verona)

Train back was uneventful and for dinner we had leftovers from a previous feast.

21 September—A day of preparation and rest in Ferrara. We had a late breakfast and caught up on news from home. Dolly is going to celebrate the arrival of a grandson, Lucia’s bay brother, in March. She was able to talk to family at home through a wonky Wi-Fi call. We will repack, recheck train reservations to Trieste where we catch our Holland America cruise to Athens, and have one more wonderful Italian dinner.
